How to Clean Your Hot Tub Filter - 4 Ways

woman and man using a hot tub

Your hot tub filter works hard for you, keeping your spa water clean and safe. And that’s why proper maintenance is so important. It might seem like a hassle, but cleaning your filter is actually one of the easiest parts of hot tub maintenance.

Check out our simple and easy guide to keeping your filter in good working order.

1. Keeping a Spare

This is certainly a step you can skip if you wish, but we recommend having two filters on hand at all times to make your spa care more efficient. Having two filters means you’ll never be without a working model during routine maintenance or a larger problem.

2. Weekly Clean

This weekly task is as essential for your hot tub as doing laundry is to keep your household running smoothly. By keeping your filter clean, you’re ensuring it will run well throughout its lifespan.

To begin, spray at an angle in between each of your filter’s pleats using a hose or water from a faucet. This will rid the filter of dirt and debris.

It’s important to keep in mind that spa filters are delicate and should not be cleaned with too much force. That means power washers, scrub brushes and the dishwasher are all major no-nos. While these methods may work for other items, they would damage the filter’s fibers.

Once the filter is clean, allow it to dry before either reinstalling or storing it.

3. Monthly Clean

Your spa’s filter needs to be cleansed with a special cleaner each month. Available at most hot tub dealerships, this chemical cleaning solution should be sprayed between the filter’s folds and allowed to sit for 15 minutes to do its work. Once that time has elapsed, rinse the filter well to get rid of all suds and residue. Rinsing well will prevent foam from appearing on top of your water.

Never use a traditional household cleaner to clean your filter. It could harm the filter’s fibers, cause foamy hot tub water or both.

4. Quarterly Cleaning

Done once every three months, a chemical soak will ensure your filter stays clean and ready for use. Because it’s done infrequently, it can be easy to forget. To ensure that it doesn’t happen, try scheduling it every time you change your hot tub’s water — another chore that should be done every three months.

To perform a chemical soak, mix the chemicals in a bucket according to the manufacturer’s directions. Once the solution is ready, place your filter in the bucket and allow it to soak for 24 hours. Rinse with water and set it out to air dry before reinstalling it in your spa.
